The art of an Apiary
Spring 2026 saw our first swarm capture. An Italian stock from a neighbor swarmed and we captured them, moved them down the road to our homostead, and into a nice new hive box. Some weeks later a fellow beekeeper needed help picking up a nucleus to which Krista offered to help. Our beekeeper friend in return let us keep a nucleus of VHS Pol-line 2.2 queen and starter colony. The bees were bred specifically for their varroa mite resistance. A disasterous formic acid treatment followed by a hive beetle slime out led us to combining the two original hives. The end of summer saw another swarm capture of wild honey bees who chose an unfortunate and unsafe space to build their hive. We have happily given them a new home here and they are thriving!
